First week of the MTC is over! It wasn't near as bad as I thought it would be, I guess I don't mind studying for 8+ hours every day. My first companion was Elder Bickmore, he's also speaking Mandarin, but going to Singapore! He's super nice (and smart). He got a 1550 on the SAT, took like 11 AP classes, and got a full tuition scholarship to BYU! He's pretty amazing, he taught me so much while he was my companion! But the reason I said "first" was because apparently they made a mistake and assigned me the wrong companion. So 2 days in, they had to switch us all around. It was sad, because Elder Bickmore was awesome, but my new companion is great too! My new companion is Elder Beam. He's actually half taiwanese-he lived in Taiwan (Kaohsiung) until he was 8, so he already knows a LOT of Chinese, which is super helpful when it comes to language study. He's also a convert, he got baptized last year! He's going to Scotland/Ireland on his mission, which borders my mission!
My district is super awesome too! The other Elder Ensign (Matthew) isn't in my district, but he's in my zone, so we still get to see each other a lot. My room (the elders in my district) started having "movie nights" every night before we go to bed, where we watch the Safety Zone and the District (Missionary Training videos), so we've been having a pretty good time! The sisters are super nice too! Our district spends like 6 hours in class together every day, so I feel like I've known them for months when in reality it hasn't even been a week. The other Elder in my district is Elder Lindsay, he's going to Arcadia California. We have 4 sisters, 3 are going to Taichung, Taiwan (Sister Low, Berglund, and Sheffield), and the other sister is going to Arcadia with Elder Lindsay (Sister Davis). All of us are speaking Mandarin.
The MTC isn't bad at all! You aren't ever bored, there's always something to do. The food isn't bad either. I'm constantly feeling the Spirit (it's like a spiritual powerhouse here!), and any fears I had about going on a mission vanished almost immediately when I walked in and saw the 2,000 other missionaries there (army of Helaman???). I've learned a lot of Chinese, but I still have a long way to go... Every week you're supposed to write a talk on a specific topic that changes every week, then on sundays during sacrament meeting, they call up like 3 missionaries without warning to give their talks... in chinese... so that's SUPER stressful! But they said they wouldn't call us up on our first two weeks, so I have 2 weeks to prepare to actually give a talk.
Overall my first week has been good! I have awesome teachers, and I'm surrounded by amazing people all the time! I'm so excited for these next 8 weeks, and even more excited to go to England on September 10!
Also, so you all know, I can read emails throughout the week, I just can't reply to them until P-day, which is monday. So send me emails! Also, if you know anyone that wants to be added to my email list, have them email me and I'll add them! And if you ever want me to take you off the list or change your email let me know!
我爱你们!

Hi Mark! Matt too!
ReplyDeletePretty exciting week! I can feel the spirit in your letter! I loved the MTC experience too! You're so busy, you can't be bored! It's like everything & everyone is in complete unison with the Lord... it's just like the Lord is conducting and you're all his servants & witnesses of Jesus Christ. .. it's a perfectly balanced process between Heaven and Earth...I swear, You'll never find a more holy place to live, in my opinion... I was in the field 30 yrs ago right now in Reno, NV. The temple opened while I was in Vegas. over Christmas 1989. We were privileged to give the tours. Once in a lifetime for sure.
I know Your experiences will be plentiful & incredible! I also know, you don't know much about me...;) Here it is..I think it's cool your mom and I share the same name! :)
:) I have a 14 year old son, Jonah, who is starting to prepare for a mission. Starting high school in August... Yikes! I cant tell you what a great thing it is to share your experiences with the younger people who aren't as sure about serving.
I hope you have a great time and continue enjoying your companions. Your friend's who are going to Arcadia California, it's not too far from where my family was from, as you know,;)
I was born in Glendale California it's in that mission! Or used to be.lol ...
Your great uncle, Doug Ensign, is my dad, I'm your dads cousin. There ya go! I hope it's okay to write you? I know how busy you are so no pressure..
I just wanted you to know you have lots of support here in Colorado! :)
I remember being in the MTC and wishing I got mail. So it must be fun now to have a Blog and you can write and receive that's so cool!
Mark, You have wonderful parents! I know you know that...I don't know them as well as I wish I did.. unfortunately my father was never very good about getting our families together. It's not important now. ;) I just really was impressed by your post and wanted to respond and let you know you are loved & supported by many people you don't even know..:)
I also believe that the Lord will guide and direct you and your brother through this journey and bless and prepare the hearts of those who are ready to receive the Gospel through you.. I feel strongly you will have great success! After all, you are Ensign's, an Ensign to all nations! ;) xoxo One example of how tough it can be...
I have a 25 year old son, Jake. Hes is an Atheist since graduation in 2012.. Hard for any parent who loves their child & Loves God, to know how to help...its tough..
I hope you don't have to deal with much of that where you're going... he's going to school now and still lives at home because it's so expensive, of course. But I wonder what will happen to him as life goes on. I have found life can be very cruel & lonely. Especially when you cut God out.. Its Hard.. I'm 51 so, I'm not super old,;) but old enough. Like your folks, lol ... ;)
You will find you meet all types of people in the world. So it couldn't hurt to get to know who you're related to as well, its good to have family! Lol..
It's a good thing to serve a mission for you & others! You are about to bless so many lives! Including your own. It is awesome to go out, to another country in your cases, and volunteer, help those around you in all capacity, wherever you may be. Whatever is happening...
My heart, love, prayers and support go out to you & all men & women in the MTC. Take care of yourself and your brother..
Take care.. I hope it wasn't too weird that I wrote to you. (Insert blushing emoji, lol)
I Hope you have a wonderful Mission the both of you! lots of love, your cousin Karen..& her boys! David, Jonah and Jake..
